Often when families book in for newborn portraits one of the questions most asked is “will it include the whole family?”. And my reply is always the same – I encourage the ENTIRE family to be included in newborn sessions. I do that because welcoming a baby into a family is an exciting time for everyone, not just the baby! And I feel strongly that capturing memories of this time should include portraits of them with mum, dad, and any siblings they may have. Because those photos (memories) will often become the most treasured.
Newborn sessions are often photographed at the St Kilda studio but, as in this case, some families choose to have their sessions at home. It can be where they feel more comfortable, more relaxed, and having photos in your home can add a personal touch to the portraits.
One other factor to consider is the brothers and sisters. Newborn portraits can sometimes take a few hours to shoot as we allow extra time for feeds and settling, and if there are siblings with lots of energy (like this one’s brother had!), being in their own home gives them space to run around and play when they’re not needed for the photos.
I love the memories we captured for this family. I love that they include the entire family. And I love that we were able to capture them in their beautiful home.
Not everyone will want to include the entire family in newborn photos, and not everyone will want to have their session at home. But think about the memories you want to capture and what will mean the most to you, and hopefully that will help you decide.
