Should you have your photographer stay to cover your wedding reception?
When couples ask me about coverage of the wedding reception, there are two main things I tell them they will get by having me stay later in the day. One, some great photos of the speeches, including reactions from the crowd, and two, some fantastic dancing shots. If you think you would love to have these images included with your professional coverage then yes, you should definitely have your photographer stay.
Speeches are an important part of the day, and capturing these being given, along with reactions from the bride and groom and guests, is a great opportunity for some memorable photos. And who wouldn’t want to get some fun dancing shots of your guests like the images below! Okay, so granted this couple did have an AMAZING wedding band in Bjorn Again, but with any wedding I’d say it’s a rare event where the guests don’t get up and have a dance – who doesn’t love a good boogie? The reception is when guests really start to relax and have some fun, and capturing some great photos of your family and friends letting loose on the dance floor is always a wonderful way to finish off your photos – plus you can give them a copy as as nice touch to their thank you card.
Keep in mind that to get photos like those you don’t have to have your photographer stay for the entire reception, an extra 4-5 hours coverage is obviously going to add to the cost of your wedding photography. If your budget is tight then just have your photographer stay for an hour or two. I will often only stay for the first half of a reception, and 20-30 minutes into the first band set is usually enough time to get some great dancing shots.
Something to keep in mind when planning your day!
